Smart Test, Inc. is a non-profit organization founded in June 2008 by classroom teachers from various Rhode Island districts. Smart Test’s specialty is to develop after-school programs aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Within its short existence, Smart Test, Inc. has developed high quality programs which take place in well-structured settings using research-based methods taught by a wide variety of highly qualified teachers through grant funds from the Providence After School Alliance (PASA) and the YMCA. We are currently able to coordinate after-school programs at elementary and middle schools throughout Providence. Smart Test, Inc. has served more than 150 students annually, supporting each student’s social/emotional and academic needs, with our programs maintaining more than a 90% attendance rate.
Ming Shen: Executive Director
Founder of Smart Test, Inc. She has been a teacher for more than 24 years, with 7 years in Adult Education and 17 years working with Providence children. She is very proud to develop the programs that are very popular with the youths and are endorsed by Providence After School Alliances. She was born, raised, and educated in China before she came to Rhode Island College for her master’s degree in 1989.
Paula Marandola: Educational Director
Paula is an educator with degrees in Early Childhood, Elementary, Special Education, and has taught in Providence for 36 years. She has extensive experience in teaching both regular and special needs students and has taught children with all types of disabilities. In addition, Paula has been a dancer all her life, and has shared her love of dance and music with children all types of ages. Through grants, volunteer, and professional work, Paula has designed and implemented after school dance and performance programs, summer dance camps, and in-school movement classes for regular and special needs students.
Richard Purnell: Secretary
Richard conducted research and taught educational/developmental/social psychology courses at various universities for over 40 years. Prior to that he briefly served as a 7th and 8th grade math teacher in Texas. He continues to teach math as a volunteer at the fifth grade level and has recently (2012) received a certificate from the Family Leadership Development Institute of the Rhode Island Parent Information Network. He has also served as an officer in the PTO for three years in his son's elementary school.
